Needed a date night with your significant other lately, but don’t want to spend a lot? Maybe you don’t even want to leave the comfort of your sweatpants? I get it. I’ve been there.
In fact, I’m there now. My husband and I have been on a strict budget since I switched jobs this past January. We are keeping a close eye on every penny that comes and goes, but we still want to keep having fun together.
If you’re reading this post, then you’re likely in a similar position.
The good news is there are some great affordable date night options out there for you! One of the best ways to keep a date night affordable is to have a date night in. There are so many ways you can have a great date night from the comfort of home, and I’m going to let you in on some great ones!
In this post, I’m going to tell you about nine affordable ideas for a date night in that are extremely fun and won’t break the bank!
1. Go Camping In Your Backyard
Just getting out of your house for a while can be a great escape, even if the destination is your own backyard.
If you go camping frequently and have all the necessary equipment, make a mini staycation out of it. Cook dinner over a campfire together, then lay out a blanket and stargaze. Cozy up in your sleeping bags under your tent as you fall asleep.
Maybe you don’t go camping often and don’t have sleeping bags, a tent, etc. In that case, see if you know anyone who can lend them to you or just don’t camp overnight. You can still cook dinner over the fire before returning to your comfy bed for the night.
This is a little harder to do if you don’t have a backyard, but there are places you can go to build a bonfire if you don’t have friends or family that can let you borrow their property for a few hours.
Some beaches or local campgrounds allow campfires and bonfires. Remember, you can’t just start up a fire anywhere. Each beach or campsite will have its own rules regarding bonfires, so check at a specific location before you go.
2. Make S'mores Indoors
If you live in an apartment and don’t have a yard where you can build a campfire, then indoor s’mores can give you a little taste of the outdoors.
You can get everything you need for indoor s’mores from Walmart for $15. Besides the essential s’mores ingredients, all you need is the Sterno 2-Hour Green Heat Gel Chafing Fuel.
I’ve personally used the 2-Hour Green Heat Gel Chafing Fuel, although Sterno makes a can specifically for s’mores called S’mores Heat®. Whichever type you buy, make sure to read the safety instructions carefully.
Set the small can on your stove before you light it. The outside of it gets extremely hot, so you don’t want to set it on any furniture and end up with a burn mark on your coffee table.
If you want to make indoor s’mores extra affordable, skip the chafing fuel altogether. Although it doesn’t give you the same feel of a campfire, you can roast marshmallows over the heat from your stove burner.
3. Wine And Cheese Night In
One thing I love about a wine and cheese date night is that it’s scale-able.
You can keep it small and get a cheap bottle of wine and one block of fancy cheese from the grocery store, or you can buy a little more and have leftovers.
When we have a wine and cheese date night, we get all our supplies at Sam’s Club. We get a Black Box wine, charcuterie sampler, three good quality kinds of cheese, and a baguette. Because it’s boxed wine, it doesn’t go bad quickly. Since we bought in bulk, these supplies last for three to four date nights.
4. Beer Tasting And Pizza
Beer tasting at your local brewery can be fun, but the cost of beer flights adds up fast. Instead, do a DIY beer tasting at home. And why not throw a pizza in there for dinner as well?
Many chain grocery stores have something called Pick Your Six or Choose Your Brews, where you can build your own six-pack of beer. Mix and match from their selection. Stick with your favorites or try out the beers you’re too afraid to buy in six-pack without tasting first.
A build-your-own six-pack does typically cost more than a regular six-pack, but it is much cheaper than going to a brewery or ordering beer at a restaurant. It’s an excellent middle ground that gives you a fun beer tasting without a considerable price tag.
I’m convinced pizza and beer were made for each other. Grab a pizza to go along with the adventurous six pack you just built.
Many chain pizza restaurants have discounts and coupons on their website – use them! We live close to Domino’s, so when we get a pizza, that’s where we go. We use a coupon every time and earn points towards a free pizza!
5. Cook A Fancy Meal Together
Are there foods that you don’t cook with at home because they are too expensive or at least too costly to eat regularly during the month?
Instead of going out for an expensive meal at a restaurant, buy ingredients that you don’t often get due to their cost. This way, you get to enjoy a better quality meal than you usually do, without the added expense of someone else cooking and serving it to you.
Besides eating a fancy meal, you also get the added fun of cooking together!
One of our favorite fancy meals to cook together is filet mignon topped with fried shallots and truffle mashed potatoes. This masterpiece is my husband’s invention. No way I could come up with something like that!

6. Build A Blanket Fort And Watch Nostalgic Movies
Who didn’t love building blanket forts all over the living room growing up? This affordable date night idea is dripping with nostalgia.
Build a blanket fort in the living room equipped with a cozy comforter and pillows to sit on.
Make sure your tv is in the fort with you. Turn the nostalgia up one more notch and watch movies you loved growing up or share one of your favorite old films that your significant other hasn’t seen yet.
7. Have a Karaoke Contest In Your Living Room
Do you and your other half like to sing your hearts out with the music as you drive in your car? Then try something different and have a karaoke date night in your living room.
Don’t have a karaoke machine? Not a problem! There are many free karaoke apps you can download, like Smule or Karaoke – Sing Unlimited Songs. Smule will even measure how well you hit all the notes in the song and give you a score.
If you’re both a little competitive, use your scores and make a competition out of it. See who can sing it best or hit the most challenging notes.

8. Join DateBox Club To Make Every Date A Surprise
DateBox Club is a subscription box that delivers a date-in-a-box to your door monthly for just $35. Everything you’ll need for the date is in the box.
The theme of the date box changes each month, so you have something new and exciting to do together every time. DateBox themes revolve around activities that will grow your relationship like cooking together, painting, DIY projects, etc.
Although I haven’t personally tried DateBox Club, I am looking forward to getting some wiggle room in our budget so we can try it out. I love the idea of a designated date night, where we can be surprised by what our new date is each month.
9. Have A Themed Movie Marathon
Are you feeling like staying on your comfy couch for a while? Maybe even staying in your sweatpants all day? Well, pull out the popcorn and plan a themed movie marathon for your date night in.
Pick a trilogy to watch together like Back to the Future or The Matrix. Maybe you’re up for a thirteen-hour marathon, and you break out the Lord of the Rings. If those muggle movies aren’t your taste, move your Herbology and Potions textbooks off the couch, and enjoy a nice, long Harry Potter marathon.
If it’s getting close to the holidays, have a holiday-themed movie marathon. Halloween is the perfect time for a horror marathon! When Christmas rolls around, break out the eggnog while you watch your Christmas favorites.
As you can see, there are many ways to have a fun date night in with your significant other without emptying your wallet.
I think one of the hardest things to overcome is the mentality that you can’t do much on a date if you don’t spend a lot of money. Saving money is all about getting creative and thinking outside the box.
